Oh wonder is a london-based alternative pop duo, consist of anthony West and Josephine V. Gucht. "Drive" is one of my favorite song from Oh Wonder. Now i would like to breakdown into small part of this song.
Remember on 2015 there is Shake it off from taylor swift which is one of the huge radio hit of the year. And this song was inspired by Swift's song. The famous song is utilized here as a metaphor or the redundant nature of the relationship between boy and girl on the video. The love between couples has turned into familiar cycle. I call it as satan cycles, that brings back to the same issues over and over again. On the pre-chorus it tells us that the person is trying to leave behind the relationship. But sadly , it keeps following the and haunting them.
"And i promised i'd be there, but you don't make it easy . Darling , Please believe me"
Sense the vulnerability within these lyrics. they have promised to stick together through the good and the bad , but difficulties of this relationship was ruin everything that they've planned before.
Oh the chorus line , we can find out the meaning of this song. That she can't love him anymore. He is just too difficult to be loved by her. And all shee know that it only leaves her hurt in the end.
On the other hand, i've read some references it said that these line could be about unrequited love.
"All i do is not enough" . Actually these line hit me so hard. i can relate this to the girl's effort. that she has tried to earn his love , but simply he doesn't love her back. Loving him is just too hard for her, and end up hurting so she should've leave him earlier.
And here we go, turn into my favorite part of this song. the second verse became an evident that the girl has a previous record when it comes to being dishonest. it's happened too often and it became a routine, routine lies. it's easy for him to look her weakness point and he took advantage of the forgiving nature of their relatioonship. But remember, that this one won't last long. Their love has become a frustrating cycle that always ends up in the same arguments.
And on the last verse line, it said that actually she could stay much longer but she know that there's another place that much better for her.
Anthony and Josephine are really good component to make a goddamn bridge on this song. on these line they're trying to show how strong and smart she is about taking lesson from her relationship. She will always remember how he played her and doesn't let it happen again. And the last thing and ofc the worst thing about breaking up is when you still thinks and having feelings on your ex but you know that you don't want to. And you start begging your mind and your heart to let it go.
because Oh Wonder, i know that must be a better genre for heart break. Using a simple and loveable metaphor that they put on the lyrics and make their song more adorable .
